Bonifacio Veronese, Sacra Conversazione with Tobias and the Angel: Detail: Saints Peter and Mark

Circa 1540-43
Oil on canvas
Columbia Museum of Art, Columbia, South Carolina. Gift of the Samuel H. Kress Foundation.

On the far right of the painting Saint Peter (keys in hand) narrates the events of Christ's life while St. Mark writes them down in his gospel. In Sacra Conversazione paintings Peter is usually on the right, which was considered the more worthy side. In I Peter 5:13 the saint refers to Mark as "my son," so Veronese has given pictured Peter as a man old enough to have a grown son and Mark as a more young man with dark hair and beard.
